Choosing a round Tahitian strand
Four things decide what a strand looks like on you and what it costs.
Size
Round Tahitians run from about 8 mm past 15 mm, and we occasionally hold very rare strands larger than that. Each strand carries its measured range because the size determines the look and much of the value. 8 to 11 mm is the classic range, and every millimeter above that costs disproportionately more.
Overtone
Peacock is the famous one and throws green and rose depending on the light. Green is the most common. Silver is the quietest and the easiest to wear in daylight. This is the thing people remember about a strand.
Grade
AA+ through AAA, and we list AA+/AAA where a strand sits honestly between the two rather than rounding it up. On round strands the grade is mostly about surface and how tightly the pearls match each other.
Clasp
Chosen on the product page. Polished, matte and large orbit in 14K, or an 18K diamond clasp sized to the strand. Everything is solid gold and any diamonds are natural.
Before you buy
Why does round cost so much more?
Because the oyster rarely obliges. A black-lipped oyster produces far more baroque and drop pearls than round ones, and a round strand needs thirty or forty of them matched to each other in size, surface and overtone. You are paying for the search as much as the pearls. If the roundness is not the part you care about, a good baroque strand will give you more color for less money.
Is the dark color natural?
Yes. The black-lipped oyster lays down dark nacre on its own, so both the body color and the overtone belong to the pearl. Nothing here is dyed, tinted or irradiated.
Why is every size range different?
Because every strand is different. We measure the actual strand and publish that range rather than rounding it into a tidy category. It makes the page harder to skim and it is the honest way to list them.
Can I choose the length and the clasp?
Yes to both. Every strand is knotted to order on twin silk, so the listed length is a starting point. Tell us what you want and we will tell you what the strand allows. Clasps are chosen on the product page and run up to 18K diamond clasps sized to the pearls.
Can I see the exact strand, and can you match earrings to it?
Every strand is already photographed. Ask and we will send more images, a short video, or two or three strands side by side so you can compare them properly. And if you order earrings, a pendant or a bracelet at the same time, we match those pearls to the strand before anything is set, at no charge. Matching a Tahitian months later is genuinely harder.
Overtone is the one thing a photograph cannot settle
