Choosing a baroque Tahitian strand
Four things decide what a strand looks like on you and what it costs.
What baroque means here
Not round, on purpose. Some strands are drops, some are circled with rings around them, some are free-form. What they share is a surface that is doing something, and that movement is the whole appeal.
Size
Baroque runs the same range as round, from about 8 mm past 15 mm and occasionally larger. Each strand carries its measured range because the size determines the look and much of the value.
Overtone
Peacock, green and silver, with aubergine and pistachio turning up now and then. Baroque holds overtone better than round does, because the uneven surface catches the light from more directions at once.
Grade and clasp
AA+ through AAA, and we list AA+/AAA where a strand sits honestly between the two. Clasps run from a polished ball to an 18K diamond clasp, chosen on the product page. Everything is solid gold and any diamonds are natural.
Before you buy
Is baroque a lesser pearl than round?
No, it is a different one, and we would rather say that than sell you up. Round is rarer and prices accordingly, but a baroque strand gives you larger pearls, stronger overtone and more movement for the same money. Plenty of people who can afford round buy baroque because they prefer it. What baroque is not is a way to get a round strand cheaply.
Is the dark color natural?
Yes. The black-lipped oyster lays down dark nacre on its own, so both the body color and the overtone belong to the pearl. Nothing here is dyed, tinted or irradiated.
Will the pearls match each other?
In color and size, closely. In shape, deliberately not. A baroque strand is matched so the pearls belong together while each one stays itself, which is a harder job than matching round pearls and is most of what separates a good baroque strand from a cheap one. If you want uniformity, look at the round strands instead.
Can I choose the length and the clasp?
Yes to both. Every strand is knotted to order on twin silk, so the listed length is a starting point. Tell us what you want and we will tell you what the strand allows. Clasps are chosen on the product page and run up to 18K diamond clasps.
Can I see the exact strand before it ships?
Every strand is already photographed. On baroque it is worth asking for more, because what you are buying is the way light moves across an uneven surface. Ask on any product page and we will send extra photographs, a short video, or two or three strands side by side, at no cost and with no obligation to buy.
Baroque never photographs well
Book twenty minutes and we will turn strands in the light so you can see what the camera is losing. Most people who were undecided stop being undecided at that point.
