Which pearl should you buy?

Four types, four different jobs. Nothing here is better than anything else.

Freshwater

The most pearl for the money, and the only type that comes in natural pink, peach and lavender. Usually where a first strand or a first pair of studs starts.

Akoya

The classic white pearl, and the sharpest luster of any type. Usually 6 to 9.5 mm. This is what most people picture when they picture a pearl.

Tahitian

Dark natural color in peacock, green and silver. Bigger than akoya, and no two strands are alike, which is why the size ranges look uneven.

South Sea

The largest pearls anyone cultures, in white or natural gold. The smallest South Sea pearl is about where akoya stops.

Before you buy

What puts a piece on this page?

One of two things. Either it is among the pieces ordered most often across the site, or it is new and we think it is worth your attention.

Is this everything you sell?

Not close. This is a small slice of the catalog. If you are looking for a particular size, color or length and you do not see it here, it almost certainly exists somewhere on the site, and if it does not we can usually make it. The links further down take you to the full collections by pearl type.

Why are some of the size ranges so uneven?

Because some of these are one-off strands rather than production pieces. A strand listed at 11.2 to 12.6 mm is that strand, measured. Round akoya and freshwater come in half-millimeter steps because we have enough of them to sort that way. Tahitian and South Sea baroques do not work like that, so we list what is actually on the strand.

Can I see the exact piece before it ships?

Yes. Every piece on the site is photographed, and if you want more images, a short video, or two pieces compared side by side, just ask. There is no charge and no obligation to buy.

Do these sell out?

The one-of-a-kind strands do, permanently. The production pieces are made to order, so a size showing as available now will usually still be available later, though the exact pearls will be different ones. If you are choosing between two pieces and one is unique, that is the one to decide on first.

Still deciding?

Our specialists will show you pearls on camera and talk you through what you are looking at. Most appointments run about twenty minutes.
