Freshwater pearls

No category of cultured pearl has changed as fast. Most of what you read about freshwater pearls online describes an industry that no longer exists.

Freshwater pearls grow in mussels rather than oysters, in lakes and ponds across China. For most of their history they were grown without a bead, which made them solid nacre throughout, and a single mussel produced dozens at a time. That is still true of a large share of production, including some of the finest. What bead nucleation changed is size: effectively every freshwater pearl much above 15 mm has a bead in it.

This is also where I started. I was a flight attendant in the 1990s and bought my first strand on a layover in Beijing, for a girlfriend: 7 to 8 mm, off-round, white. For the first few years I bought from a market there. That was more than twenty years ago and I have long since moved to buying at the source, but this is where it began.

The short version

What makes a freshwater a freshwater

The animal. Freshwater pearls grow in mussels, not oysters, and a freshwater mussel is a far more accommodating host than any saltwater pearl oyster.

A saltwater oyster accepts one or two grafts and produces one or two pearls per cycle. A freshwater mussel can accept a dozen to several dozen grafts across the large surface of its mantle, and it can be used for more than one cycle. That single biological fact explains most of the difference in price, availability and variety between freshwater and everything else.

Freshwater mussels are also bred rather than collected. Hatcheries raise them from larvae, which attach to the gills of host fish for a couple of weeks before settling out as juveniles. Farmers control the genetics, and in the last few years that control has become the main lever on quality.

The distinction that matters most

Two ways they grow

Every cultured pearl starts with a piece of donor mantle tissue. The question is whether a bead goes in with it.

Without a bead

Small pieces of donor mantle tissue are implanted directly into the mantle of the host mussel. Each piece forms its own pearl sac and deposits nacre around nothing but itself. The result is a pearl that is solid nacre all the way through.

This is the traditional method and it still produces a large share of the market, including some of the finest freshwater pearls made. It gives you the organic shapes freshwater is known for, a softer and more diffuse luster than saltwater, and the natural pastel colors. Truly round pearls grown this way are exceptionally rare, which is what makes a genuinely round non-nucleated strand worth what it costs.

With a bead

A bead nucleus goes in alongside the tissue, and the pearl grows as a nacre coat over it. This is how akoya, Tahitian and South Sea have always been grown, and applying it to freshwater mussels took a long time to work because their anatomy is nothing like a saltwater oyster's.

It now accounts for the majority of Chinese freshwater production. What it does that tissue nucleation cannot is size: effectively every freshwater pearl much above 15 mm has a bead inside it. It also holds a round shape more reliably.

Three distinct forms account for most of what you will see.

Fireball
Baroque
A bead is placed into an existing pearl sac after a pearl has already been harvested. They grow in the mantle, they are large, and they usually develop a tail-like extension where the sac did not close around the bead. Valued for size, strong natural color and the fact that no two are alike.
In-body
12 mm and up
The bead goes deep into the soft tissue rather than the mantle. Early ones were rippled and baroque. Today the fine ones are large, smooth and increasingly round, with metallic luster and saturated color. This is where the freshwater category competes directly with saltwater on presence.
Small round
2 to 10 mm
The most consequential recent development. A shell is first used to grow a large in-body pearl. It is then lifted from the water, small round beads are inserted into the mantle, and it goes back in. At harvest everything comes out together, the small round pearls and the large in-body pearl with them. Production started at two to five millimeters and has moved rapidly into six millimeters and above.

Beads are also used to grow shapes rather than spheres. Coins, hearts, stars and similar forms are all bead-grown, and they sit mostly at the lower end of the market. Designers buy them for the shape itself.

A bead-nucleated freshwater pearl has a bead inside it, which means nacre thickness matters again in a way it does not for solid-nacre freshwater. It is a fair question to ask, and it is not one most sellers of this material are prepared to answer.

Something we made

Freshadama

Freshadama is our own grade. We created it about twenty years ago, and what makes it unusual is not the name. It is how the strands are built.

Fine freshwater gets sorted in two directions. Most of it is sorted into strands. A smaller share is set aside loose, because pearls of that quality go into earrings, pendants and rings, where a single pearl is seen on its own and has nowhere to hide. Loose pearls are selected one at a time, against a standard that strand material never has to meet.

A Freshadama strand is built entirely from loose-grade pearls. Every pearl in it was good enough to have been sold on its own.

That is not how the industry works, and I found that out first-hand. On a buying trip to China I asked a supplier to string a large lot of loose stock for me. She told me nobody does that. She was right, and we have been doing it ever since.

In practice it means round rather than near-round, very high luster, clean surface and tight matching. It also means the material is genuinely difficult to source, which is why you will see AAAA offered as an equivalent. It is not one. AAAA is a seller-defined grade applied to strand-sorted material, and it describes a different thing entirely.

Held beside a fine akoya, a Freshadama strand is difficult to tell apart on shape, color and luster. What it will not have is the akoya price.

What actually comes out of the mussel

Color and shape

The common natural colors are white and the pastels: pink, peach and lavender, and every shade between. Other pearl types do produce unusual natural colors, but they are rare and priced accordingly. Freshwater is the one type where a pastel strand is something you can actually go out and buy.

Saturated natural colors do occur. Bronze, copper, green and deep purple are comparatively rare, and when they are natural they are worth a great deal more than the pastels.

Freshwater is also the type where treatment is most common. Dyed material in black, chocolate, cranberry and every fashion color is everywhere, and a lot of it is sold without disclosure. Pastel pearls are the ones usually selected for dyeing black to imitate Tahitians. White freshwater has traditionally been bleached, though new donor-tissue genetics are starting to make that unnecessary.

Luster is the value factor that matters most, and freshwater luster is characteristically softer and more diffuse than saltwater. A small number of freshwater pearls break that rule and come out genuinely metallic, close to mirror-like. It is scarce, it is most often seen in naturally colored pearls, and it is not to everyone's taste. Some people find it too bright.

A wider range than any other type

Size

Freshwater covers a broader size range than any other cultured pearl. Seed pearls run under a millimeter. Large in-body bead-nucleated pearls pass fifteen millimeters routinely, and the largest go past twenty. Most commercial production sits between six and twelve.

The range is the thing I like most about this category. It is not only size. The color palette has widened enormously in the last decade. It used to be white and the pastels, peach through lavender, and that was more or less the whole of it. Now, particularly in the larger bead-nucleated material, there is a great deal more. Chinese producers are relentlessly inventive, and it seems as though every year brings a new shape or a new color. The only real way to stay current is to be there when it happens.

For strands, 7.5 to 8.0 mm is the most popular size we sell. Fine freshwater is sorted in half-millimeter steps, and the difference shows. A strand sold as 7.5 to 8.0 mm is visibly larger, rounder and better matched than one sold as 7.0 to 8.0 mm, because the wider range is how a supplier moves the pearls that did not make the tighter sort. When you see a full-millimeter range on a strand, that is information.

One millimeter sounds like nothing. Because a pearl is a sphere, it is not. As a rule of thumb, two millimeters roughly doubles the apparent size of a pearl.

Read this before you buy anything branded

Names you will see

There is no universally accepted term for bead-nucleated freshwater pearls, so the market filled the gap with brand names. Most of them describe marketing rather than biology.

Edison, Ming, Ikecho

Brand names for bead-nucleated freshwater pearls. Pearls sold under different names are often produced by similar methods. The name tells you who marketed it, not what it is.

Kasumiga

A trademarked name rather than a place. Lake Kasumi ga Ura in Japan does still produce pearls, in quantities small enough that almost nothing sold as Kasumiga comes from there. Most of it is Chinese in-body material, which may be very good, but it is not Japanese.

Freshwater akoya, or AK freshwater

Used in China for the new small bead-nucleated round freshwater pearls, and starting to appear in trade conversation elsewhere. It is misleading and should not be used. Akoya is not a generic word for a small round pearl. It refers to a saltwater pearl from Pinctada fucata martensii. These are a real achievement and they can genuinely resemble akoya, but they are freshwater pearls and they differ in nacre structure, durability, rarity and value.

One thing to ask about on in-body pearls: color stability. Some material sold over the past decade under names like Edison and Ming faded, in some cases quickly. Producers traced it in 2025 to the use of very young shells and now use shells aged three years or older. That change is recent and long-term results are not established, so some caution is still warranted.

Where they grow

China

Essentially all of the world's freshwater pearls come from China. Farming runs from family ponds of a few hundred mussels to industrial operations covering areas the size of several football fields, and a relatively small number of large producers account for most of the output. Trading runs through Shanxiahu, near Zhuji, before the pearls reach Hong Kong and the international shows.

I took a Berlitz Mandarin immersion course specifically so I could come here and buy directly from the producers and processors rather than through a market stall. I have been back dozens of times since, usually for a week or more at a stretch, working from the large processors down to family factories, sorting loose pearls.

The area itself is remarkable. Driving through it you pass farm after farm after farm. Some cover the ground of several football fields. Others are a pond behind a house, worked about the way a family in Japan works a rice paddy. The whole region is built around this one industry.

I still come at least once a year, and I am almost always the only westerner there. I do not run into other buyers. Nearly everyone in this trade sources freshwater in Hong Kong, which is more comfortable and considerably easier. But Hong Kong runs about a season behind. When I am there during or just after a harvest, I can find what I am actually looking for.

Two things have changed the industry recently and neither is widely understood outside it.

Processing has automated. Sorting that used to occupy hundreds of workers at long tables is now done by machines that separate pearls by color, then size, then shape, at a speed and consistency no hand-sorting operation could match. Drilling and stringing are being automated next.

Farming is also becoming regenerative. High stocking densities and uncontrolled feeding polluted water systems badly enough that the government shut farming down in several regions. Newer systems suspend mussels individually and feed them through a precision drip line directly into the shell, so nutrients do not disperse into the water. Water quality is monitored continuously and recirculated through biological treatment, and the mussels themselves help filter it. It is not yet widespread, but it is where this is going.

What they are worth

Value

Freshwater is the least expensive of the four types at the bottom of the market and the one with the widest spread between worst and best. A cheap freshwater strand and a Freshadama strand are the same species from the same country with two orders of magnitude between them.

That spread is the opportunity. A fine freshwater strand delivers most of what a fine akoya delivers for a fraction of the price, and for a first strand it is usually where I point people.

The two production methods are also valued differently. For non-nucleated pearls: luster first, then shape, surface, matching, size, and whether the color is natural or dyed. For bead-nucleated pearls, size becomes a dominant factor, color saturation matters more, and shape is judged by type. A fireball is meant to be baroque. An in-body or small round pearl is judged strictly on symmetry.
