Choosing a golden South Sea strand
Four things decide what a strand looks like on you and what it costs.
Color depth
The single biggest price driver here. Pale champagne is beautiful and affordable. Deep gold is rare and costs several times as much for the same size and grade. Nothing in between is a compromise, they are simply different looks.
Size
Golden South Sea runs from about 8 mm past 16 mm. Each strand carries its own measured range because these are matched individually. 10 to 13 mm is the classic, and larger sizes in deep gold are the rarest thing on this page.
Shape
Round is the rarest and prices accordingly. Baroque and drop cost less, run larger and catch light from more angles, which on a gold pearl makes the color move. A golden baroque strand is a serious object in its own right.
Grade and clasp
AA+ through AAA, and we list AA+/AAA where a strand sits honestly between the two. Clasps are chosen on the product page. Everything is solid gold and any diamonds are natural.
Before you buy
Is the golden color natural?
Yes, and this is the question to ask anyone selling golden pearls. The gold-lipped oyster produces the color itself and we do not sell treated golden South Sea. Treated gold exists and is common in the trade. It tends to look uniform, sits too evenly across a strand, and often shows color concentrated in the drill holes. Natural gold varies pearl to pearl, which is exactly why matching a deep golden strand is so expensive.
Why is deep gold so much more expensive than champagne?
Because the oyster decides, and it mostly decides on pale. Deep gold is a small fraction of any harvest, and a strand needs thirty or more pearls matched to each other at that depth of color as well as on size, shape and surface. The jump from light to deep gold is the steepest price step in South Sea, steeper than the jump from baroque to round.
Why is every size range different?
Because every strand is different. These are genuine pearls graded and matched one at a time, so we measure the actual strand and publish that range rather than rounding it into a category. It is the honest way to list them.
Can I choose the length and the clasp?
Yes to both. Every strand is knotted to order on twin silk, so the listed length is a starting point. Tell us what you want and we will tell you what the strand allows. Clasps are chosen on the product page. Everything is solid gold, never gold-plated, and any diamonds are natural.
Can I see the exact strand, and can you match earrings to it?
Ask and we will photograph it, at no cost and with no obligation to buy. Gold is the hardest body color to photograph honestly, because a camera's white balance will push a strand warmer or cooler than it really is.
