Golden South Sea color

What Rich Gold means

Golden South Sea pearls run from a soft, pale gold to a deep and saturated one. The color comes from the gold-lipped oyster and from the donor tissue used at nucleation. It is never dyed or coated.

Depth describes saturation, not quality. A lighter pearl with exceptional luster and a clean surface can be worth more than a darker one without them. Deep gold is simply the rarest, and when it arrives with fine luster and good shape it is among the most valuable cultured pearls in the world.

  • Light Gold Soft and pale. About the warmth of 10 karat gold. Reads as a glow across the piece rather than as a color.
  • Gold The color most people picture. Close to 14 karat gold, and the middle of the range.
  • Rich Gold This piece. Noticeably deeper, nearer 18 karat. Uncommon, and the point at which color starts driving the price.
  • Deep Gold The rarest. As saturated as 24 karat gold. Only a small part of any harvest reaches it, and matching a strand takes years.

The karat comparisons are there to give you something familiar to picture. Nothing about a pearl is measured that way, and the pearls contain no gold.

Golden South Sea grading

What AAA means on this strand

Our grades consider luster, shape, surface and matching together, and luster is what they turn on. For surface we describe what the piece actually looks like rather than quoting a clean percentage. At these sizes a piece will almost always carry some marking, and a number cannot tell you whether that marking matters.

  • ALow to medium luster, noticeable variation from the stated shape, and marking readily visible across the piece.
  • AA+Medium to high luster with some variation in shape. More marking, sometimes accepted for the beauty of the piece as a whole.
  • AA+/AAAVery high luster, closely conforming to its stated shape. Most pearls very clean, with a few carrying more. The combined grade describes variation in surface, not mixed luster or an inconsistently matched strand.
  • AAAThis piece. Very high luster, closely conforming to its stated shape, clean overall with any marking minor enough not to draw the eye.

Select Gem A selection that sits outside this scale rather than above it. Not a tier we sort into, but a collection built over time: exceptional natural color, shape and surface at once, with any marking slight or sitting where a setting will cover it. Collected one pearl at a time, then assembled pearl by pearl.

11.5–15.0 mm round golden South Sea pearl and diamond necklace
31 round golden South Sea pearls · rich golden color · 25.3 momme · approx. 17 inches · 18K yellow gold diamond clasp (120 diamonds, 1.31 ctw)

A fine golden South Sea strand of thirty-one perfectly round pearls measuring 11.5 to 15.0 mm, in an intensely rich natural golden, the highest tier of golden color the species produces. Thick nacre and superb luster carry that color, and the pearls are matched evenly for tone and surface across the strand.

Golden pearls live and die by their color. Plenty are a pale, washed-out yellow. The finest, like these, hold a deep, saturated gold that seems to radiate from within the pearl rather than sit on its surface. That richness is the rarest and most valuable thing a golden strand can have, and it is something you have to see rather than read about. Every pearl here was selected and matched for that depth of color, in the tradition that defined Assael.

Finished at approximately 17 inches with an 18K yellow gold clasp set with 120 natural diamonds totaling 1.31 carats.

The true depth of this gold only shows itself in person, so we’d welcome the chance to arrange a private viewing, at our Los Angeles vault or by virtual appointment.

A museum-caliber strand from the Assael Collection, held in our Los Angeles vault. Once it sells, it will not be available again.

What you can count on before you look at a single pearl

We do our own buying

We do not outsource our buying, and we do not pick from someone else's catalog. Every pearl we sell is sourced, inspected and bought by us, from the growers, producers and dealers we have worked with for decades.

Natural color, guaranteed

Nothing we sell in this category is dyed, irradiated or color enhanced. The color you see grew in the oyster.

Finished in Los Angeles

Matched, strung and finished by our own team, with a solid gold clasp and a safety catch. Length and clasp can be changed before we ship.

Buying from us

This piece is one of a kind

It has no reviews of its own because only one exists. These are reviews of Pearl Paradise from people who bought something else.

I ordered a string of pearls, and to my disappointment, they were too short. No problem. Paradise Pearls was wonderful, exchanged my string and I ordered a longer string. I am SO very pleased with them and love wearing them.

Loved the human contact when I asked for photos, shipping was delivered on time and the pearl necklace is gorgeous. Definitely buying more from pearl paradise.

Melissa M. · Verified buyer

When I called to ask questions, customer service was so helpful. They answered all my questions and reassured me that I was buying high quality pearls.
