Akoya grading

What Hanadama means on this bracelet

Our akoya grades consider luster, shape, surface, nacre and matching together, and luster is what they turn on. There is no universal akoya standard, so AAA means different things at different companies and the letters alone are not worth much. Ours is an internal standard.

  • ABright luster that goes hazy at the edges. Round to near round, 75 to 85% clean, with thin nacre.
  • AA+Bright, with the edge of a reflection nearly sharp. Round, 85 to 95% clean, with medium nacre.
  • AAABright and sharp. Round, 95% clean or better, with visibly thick nacre and close matching.
  • HanadamaThis piece. Certified in Japan by an independent laboratory, then selected by us from the upper end of that range. Hanadama is a quality range rather than a single level, so two certified strands can differ considerably.

When you slip a 9.0-9.5 mm, top-graded hanadama akoya bracelet onto your wrist, your day will change. You will catch yourself staring, mesmerized by a luster and ever-changing play of subtle colors most never experience. This unmistakable beauty is only found in the finest, top-graded hanadama akoya pearls. You will fall in love.

Your bracelet will arrive double knotted on twin silk thread, protecting your pearls from rubbing and scratching against each other. The solid 14 karat gold clasp comes with a safety mechanism to ensure your investment stays safely on your wrist.

There is a quality range within hanadama standards, and this bracelet is composed of top-graded hanadama akoya pearls grown in the cold coastal waters of Japan. The finest pearls from this region are known for their mirror-like luster and smooth surfaces – qualities you will clearly see the moment you open the box.

Hanadama akoya pearls come from a special category of pearls. While there is no recognized international standard for grading akoya pearls, every harvest produces pearls that are considered special, and these pearls are separated from all others and treated differently. These pearls are referred to as hanadama. They are reserved as the very best of the harvest. But even within this category, there is always a quality range.

For decades we have been working with the same family-run farms in Japan. These families understand our rigorous standards and select hanadama pearls specifically for us. They ensure these pearls are only the top range of the hanadama category.

Once the hanadama pearls are selected, they are imported and graded by our Chief Creative Officer, Hisano. She examines every strand and every pearl to ensure the quality is always up to par. She rejects any pearls that do not fall within the highest hanadama range. She has the best eye in the business and loves what she does. This is something you will recognize the moment you open the box. These pearls will take your breath away.

Accompanying your pearls is a uniquely numbered and laminated pearl quality report prepared by the Pearl Science Laboratory of Japan, which describes in detail the beauty and perfection of your hanadama akoya pearl bracelet.

Before you decide

We can show you the pearls first

The pearls are here in our Los Angeles office. Before you buy anything, we will photograph the exact pearls we would use for your bracelet and send them to you.

We knot to order, so you may see the pearls before they have been strung and clasped.

What you will see

Photographs of the exact pearls we would use for your bracelet.

We hold the exact pearls we photograph for you for 24 hours while you decide.

We usually reply within one business day, Monday through Friday.

The same on everything we sell

What you can count on before you look at a single pearl

We do our own buying

We do not outsource our buying, and we do not pick from someone else's catalog. Every pearl we sell is sourced, inspected and bought by us, from the growers, producers and dealers we have worked with for decades.

Made in Los Angeles

Matched and finished by our own team rather than pulled off a shelf, and still out the door within one business day.

Graded to our own standard

There is no universal pearl grading standard. Ours is internal, applied the same way across everything we sell, and luster is what it turns on.
