Akoya grading

What AAA means on this strand

Our akoya grades consider luster, shape, surface, nacre and matching together, and luster is what they turn on. There is no universal akoya standard, so AAA means different things at different companies and the letters alone are not worth much. Ours is an internal standard.

  • ABright luster that goes hazy at the edges. Round to near round, 75 to 85% clean, with thin nacre.
  • AA+Bright, with the edge of a reflection nearly sharp. Round, 85 to 95% clean, with medium nacre.
  • AAAThis piece. Bright and sharp. Round, 95% clean or better, with visibly thick nacre and close matching.
  • HanadamaCertified in Japan by an independent laboratory, then selected by us from the upper end of that range. Hanadama is a quality range rather than a single level, so two certified strands can differ considerably.

Based on the surface, shape, luster and matching, this strand falls within our AAA grading range.

The finest Akoya pearls, grown in the cold coastal waters of Japan, are known for their perfect round shape, mirror-like luster, and smooth surfaces.

Each pearl is individually knotted on double silk so they never rub against each other or scratch and finished with a solid 14-karat clasp including a safety hook that ensures your pearls will always be safe and secure.

Before you decide

We can show you the pearls first

The pearls are here in our Los Angeles office. Before you buy anything, we will photograph the exact strand we would use for your necklace and send it to you.

We knot to order, so you may see the pearls before they have been strung and clasped.

What you will see

Photographs of the exact strand we would use for your necklace.

We hold the exact pearls we photograph for you for 24 hours while you decide.

We usually reply within one business day, Monday through Friday.

The same on everything we sell

What you can count on before you look at a single pearl

We do our own buying

We do not outsource our buying, and we do not pick from someone else's catalog. Every pearl we sell is sourced, inspected and bought by us, from the growers, producers and dealers we have worked with for decades.

Made in Los Angeles

Matched and finished by our own team rather than pulled off a shelf, and still out the door within one business day.

Graded to our own standard

There is no universal pearl grading standard. Ours is internal, applied the same way across everything we sell, and luster is what it turns on.
