What AAA means on this pair

Our grades consider luster, shape, surface and matching together, and luster is what they turn on. For surface we describe what the piece actually looks like rather than quoting a clean percentage. At these sizes a piece will almost always carry some marking, and a number cannot tell you whether that marking matters.

  • ALow to medium luster, noticeable variation from the stated shape, and marking readily visible across the piece.
  • AA+Medium to high luster with some variation in shape. More marking, sometimes accepted for the beauty of the piece as a whole.
  • AA+/AAAVery high luster, closely conforming to its stated shape. Most pearls very clean, with a few carrying more. The combined grade describes variation in surface, not mixed luster or an inconsistently matched strand.

Two faceted Tahitian drop pearls · 18K white gold · pavé diamond caps (0.06 ctw)

Natural color Tahitian cultured pearls measuring 15.0 to 16.0 mm, cut with facets across the entire surface. Faceting removes nacre, so it is only done on pearls with enough depth to take it, and the cut catches light in flat planes rather than in the single rolling highlight a smooth pearl gives.

The green and aubergine overtones in the nacre shift from facet to facet as the earrings move. Each pearl hangs from a small pavé diamond cap on an 18K white gold hook, 0.06 carats in total, so nothing draws attention away from the surface.
