As the founder of Sea Hunt Pearls, Jack spent decades traveling the world, sourcing extraordinary pearls, and introducing unique varieties to designers, jewelers, and collectors. While many know of his official retirement in 2016, fewer are aware that Jack never truly left the pearl world—he simply shifted focus.
The Sea Hunt Pearls Journey
Jack established Sea Hunt Pearls in San Francisco, where he became known for offering an eclectic selection of cultured pearls, from classic Akoya and South Sea to rare and unusual freshwater finds. He played a pivotal role in expanding awareness of bead-nucleated freshwater pearls and was one of the first to introduce "fireball" pearls to the United States.
Jack was also responsible for coining the term “soufflé pearls,” describing the remarkable hollow, highly lustrous freshwater pearls that he helped bring to market. His booths at major trade shows like the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) were legendary, drawing industry insiders eager to discover the latest pearl treasures he had uncovered. But after decades of navigating the trade show circuit, Jack decided to take a step back.
A Hidden Legacy
Though he officially retired, Jack continued to operate a private business, selecting high-end pearls on a much smaller, more exclusive scale. He still traveled to source the best pearls, maintaining relationships with top suppliers and handpicking remarkable specimens. His focus shifted from large-volume sales to curating a private collection for select clients who valued his expertise. This quiet continuation of his work was known only to those closest to him, preserving his influence in the industry even after his public departure.
