Choosing a freshwater ring
Four things decide how a ring wears and what it costs.
Pearl size
Rings run 6.5 to 11 mm. On a hand the pearl reads larger than the same pearl would on a strand. 8.5 to 9.0 mm is the comfortable everyday size, and 10 mm and up is a ring you will notice every time you reach for something.
Color
White, lavender and pink to peach, all natural. Lavender and pink are the ones people pick when they already own a white pearl ring, and against skin they read warmer than a photograph suggests.
Metal
14K white, yellow or rose gold on most designs, solid throughout. Any diamonds are natural. You choose the metal on the product page and the ring is made in it for you.
Ring size
Most designs are offered from 5 to 8.5. Have the finger measured at a jeweler if you are not sure. A pearl ring is harder to resize later than a plain band, so it is worth getting right the first time.
Before you buy
How do I get the ring size right?
Have the finger measured at any jeweler, and measure the hand it will be worn on rather than the other one. This matters more on a pearl ring than on a plain band, because resizing means working around a pearl that cannot take heat, so it is not the simple job it is on a band of gold. If you are between sizes or buying as a surprise, tell us and we will talk it through before anything is made.
Why is everything here Freshadama?
Because a ring gives a pearl nowhere to hide. It sits on a hand, at arm's length, in daylight, and it gets looked at from every angle. AAA freshwater looks round in a photograph but will wobble if you roll it on a table, and on a ring that shows. Freshadama is our own top grade, almost perfectly round with high luster and clean surfaces, and it is the only grade we will set in a ring.
Are the lavender and pink colors natural?
Yes. White, lavender and pink to peach are the pearl's own color, straight out of the mussel, with no dye involved. Black is the one exception in freshwater, because no freshwater pearl grows black, and we do not set dyed pearls in rings.
How should I care for a pearl ring?
A ring takes more punishment than anything else you will own in pearls, because hands do the work. Put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off before washing up or gardening. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth now and then. Do not put it in an ultrasonic cleaner, which will damage the nacre. A freshwater pearl is solid nacre through and through, so it stands up to daily wear better than most people expect.
Can you match a ring to other pearls I am buying?
We already do. If you order a ring at the same time as a necklace, earrings, a pendant or a bracelet, we match the pearls to each other before anything is set. You do not have to ask and there is no charge for it. On lavender and pink this is worth real money, because natural color varies and two pearls bought months apart will not necessarily agree.
