Choosing a freshwater pendant
Four things decide how a pendant wears and what it costs.
Size
Pendants run 6.5 to 11 mm. A pendant shows one pearl with nothing beside it, so size reads directly. 8.5 to 9.0 mm is the comfortable everyday choice, and 10 mm and up is where freshwater gives you presence that akoya would charge several times as much for.
Color
White, lavender and pink to peach, all the pearl's own color rather than dye. On a single pearl the color has nowhere to hide, which is why we would rather photograph it for you than let a screen decide.
Chain
A solid gold box chain is included at no extra cost. Shimmer and rope chains are offered as upgrades on the product page if you want more weight and shine against the skin.
Metal and diamonds
14K white, yellow or rose gold, solid throughout, chain and bail included. Many settings carry small diamond accents and those are always natural. The pearl stays the center of the design.
Before you buy
Does the pendant come with a chain?
Yes, a solid gold chain at no extra cost, in the same karat as the setting. Every stocked pendant comes on a 16 to 18 inch adjustable chain, so it can be worn short at the base of the neck or long, or anywhere between. It is real gold, not a plated chain you will want to replace within a year. Shimmer and rope chains are offered as upgrades on the product page, and on a larger pearl a heavier chain often looks more balanced. If you need the chain longer or shorter than the standard, tell us before you order and we will make it to the length you want. A few one-of-a-kind pieces vary, and their product pages say so.
Are the lavender and pink colors natural?
Yes. White, lavender and pink to peach are the pearl's own color, straight out of the mussel, with no dye involved. Black is the one exception in freshwater, because no freshwater pearl grows black, so anything black has been dyed and we say so on the product page.
What is Freshadama, and is it worth it on a pendant?
Freshadama is our own top grade and the name is ours. AAA freshwater looks round, but roll a AAA pearl on a table and it will wobble. Freshadama pearls are almost perfectly round with high luster and clean surfaces. On a pendant it is worth more than anywhere else, because you are buying exactly one pearl and there is nothing beside it to carry the look.
Can I see the exact pearl before it ships?
Ask us and we will photograph it for you. The pearl is chosen by hand and the pendant is set to order, so what you receive is made for you rather than pulled off a shelf. Request photographs or a short video on any product page, at no cost and with no obligation to buy.
Can you match a pendant to earrings or a necklace I am buying?
We already do. If you order a pendant at the same time as earrings, a necklace or a bracelet, we match the pearls to each other before anything is set. You do not have to ask and there is no charge for it. On colored freshwater it matters especially, because two lavender pearls bought months apart will not necessarily agree.
