Which pearl should you buy?
Four types, four different jobs. Nothing here is better than anything else.
Freshwater
The most pearl for the money, and the only one that comes in natural pink, peach and lavender. Larger sizes than akoya at a fraction of the price. Start here if this is a first strand or a gift with a budget.
Akoya
The classic white strand, and the sharpest luster of any pearl. Smaller than the others, usually 6 to 9 mm. This is what people picture when they picture pearls, and it is the right answer for a bride or a formal strand.
Tahitian
Dark color the oyster grows itself, in peacock, green and silver. Large, dramatic, and nothing else looks like it. Buy Tahitian when you want a strand that is noticed rather than assumed.
South Sea
The largest pearls anyone cultures, in white or natural gold, with nacre thick enough to glow rather than shine. This is the top of the market and the strand you buy once.
Before you buy
What length should I choose?
18 inch is the default and works with almost any neckline. 16 inch sits at the base of the neck and suits a smaller frame or an open collar. 22 inch and longer reads more relaxed and layers well. Every strand is knotted to order, so the listed lengths are a starting point rather than a limit. If you want a 17 inch, a 24 inch or a rope, tell us and we will make it.
Are all these colors natural?
Almost all of them. Freshwater comes naturally in white, pink, peach and lavender. Tahitian grows dark on its own. South Sea comes in white and natural gold. The one exception across the whole site is black freshwater, which does not occur in nature and is always dyed. We say so on those product pages rather than calling it exotic.
Are your necklaces knotted?
Every one, double-knotted on twin silk. The knots stop the pearls rubbing against each other, and if a strand ever breaks you lose one pearl rather than all of them. Every strand is finished with a solid gold clasp with a safety catch, never gold-plated and never base metal.
Can I see the exact strand before it ships?
Ask us and we will photograph it, at no cost and with no obligation to buy. Every strand is knotted to order, so the necklace you receive is assembled for you rather than pulled off a shelf.
Can you match earrings or a bracelet to the strand?
We already do. If you order earrings, a pendant or a bracelet at the same time as a necklace, we match the pearls to the strand before anything is strung or set. You do not have to ask and there is no charge for it. It is the reason a set bought from us in one order looks like a set rather than pieces that happen to be the same size.
