What Hanadama means on this bracelet

Our akoya grades consider luster, shape, surface, nacre and matching together, and luster is what they turn on. There is no universal akoya standard, so AAA means different things at different companies and the letters alone are not worth much. Ours is an internal standard.

  • ABright luster that goes hazy at the edges. Round to near round, 75 to 85% clean, with thin nacre.
  • AA+Bright, with the edge of a reflection nearly sharp. Round, 85 to 95% clean, with medium nacre.
  • AAABright and sharp. Round, 95% clean or better, with visibly thick nacre and close matching.
  • HanadamaThis piece. Certified in Japan by an independent laboratory, then selected by us from the upper end of that range. Hanadama is a quality range rather than a single level, so two certified strands can differ considerably.

This 8.0-8.5 mm hanadama akoya pearl bracelet represents the top range of the hanadama category. The sharp luster and rainbow iridescence of these pearls set them apart from every other grade of akoya.

Hanadama is not a single grade but a range. Every harvest produces a small number of pearls that are separated from the rest and submitted for hanadama certification, and even within that group there is a quality spread. For decades we have worked with the same family-run farms in Japan, who select hanadama specifically for us from the top of that range. Every strand is then graded again by our Chief Creative Officer, Hisano, before it is offered for sale.

The pearls are individually knotted on twin silk. The bracelet is available in lengths from 6.5 to 8.5 inches.

The bracelet is finished with your choice of a solid 14K gold ball clasp or an 18K gold clasp set with natural diamonds. Every clasp has a safety hook.

Each bracelet is accompanied by a uniquely numbered, laminated pearl quality report from the Pearl Science Laboratory of Japan.

"I bought hanadma’s to ensure I was buying quality pearls.The pearls are lovely and the PSL cert came with them. No problem with the product. When I made my initial order it was accepted and only after 4-5 days was I advised that the product was not in stock. I upgraded for an additional cost and PP provided expedited shipping so I would have my order before Christmas. So a bit tardy on letting me know they didn’t have what I ordered but kudos for the expedited shipping. Now my concern: I received an “appraisal” from PP for the RETAIL value of my pearls, which was a whopping 35% LESS than I paid PP for them. Obviously I’m not happy with this news. Not sure how this will affect future buying decisions."
