Akoya grading

What AA+ means on this set

Our akoya grades consider luster, shape, surface, nacre and matching together, and luster is what they turn on. There is no universal akoya standard, so AAA means different things at different companies and the letters alone are not worth much. Ours is an internal standard.

  • ABright luster that goes hazy at the edges. Round to near round, 75 to 85% clean, with thin nacre.
  • AA+This set. Bright, with the edge of a reflection nearly sharp. Round, 85 to 95% clean, with medium nacre.
  • AAABright and sharp. Round, 95% clean or better, with visibly thick nacre and close matching.
  • HanadamaCertified in Japan by an independent laboratory, then selected by us from the upper end of that range. Hanadama is a quality range rather than a single level, so two certified strands can differ considerably.

Graceful and classic, this 6.0–6.5 mm AA+ white akoya pearl set embodies timeless elegance. It’s perfect for everyday wear or gifting, offering a delicate yet refined look that never goes out of style.

This three-piece set includes a necklace, bracelet, and matching stud earrings, all featuring luminous, round akoya pearls from Japan’s cold coastal waters. Each pearl is selected through our own strict internal grading process for exceptional luster, clean surfaces, and precise matching. While there are no universal grading standards for pearls, our AA+ represents a higher level of quality than what is typically found at this grade.

The 18-inch necklace, known as the princess length, sits just below the collarbone and remains our most popular choice. For comparison, we’ve included a photo of a model wearing 16-, 18-, and 22-inch strands. Each piece is hand-knotted on twin silk in our Los Angeles studio and finished with solid 14 karat gold clasps and safety hooks for lasting beauty and security.

Since every set is made to order, we’re happy to customize the length to your preference. Simply contact our support team, and we’ll tailor your pieces to fit perfectly.

We’ve partnered for decades with a small group of family-run farms in Japan who understand our uncompromising standards. Their dedication to quality allows us to offer pearls that reflect true craftsmanship, tradition, and natural beauty—an enduring hallmark of every Pearl Paradise collection.

Before you decide

We can show you the pearls first

The pearls are here in our Los Angeles office. Before you buy anything, we will photograph the exact pearls we would use for your set and send them to you.

A set is matched as a set. The pearls in each piece are chosen to work with the others, so they read as one thing rather than two pieces that happen to be the same size.

What you will see

Photographs of the actual pearls we would use for your set.

We hold the exact pearls we photograph for you for 24 hours while you decide.

We usually reply within one business day, Monday through Friday.

The same on everything we sell

What you can count on before you look at a single pearl

We do our own buying

We do not outsource our buying, and we do not pick from someone else's catalog. Every pearl we sell is sourced, inspected and bought by us, from the growers, producers and dealers we have worked with for decades.

Made in Los Angeles

Matched and finished by our own team rather than pulled off a shelf, and still out the door within one business day.

Graded to our own standard

There is no universal pearl grading standard. Ours is internal, applied the same way across everything we sell, and luster is what it turns on.
