Choosing an akoya ring

Four things decide how a ring wears and what it costs.

Pearl size

Rings run 6.0 to 9.5 mm. On a hand the pearl reads larger than the same pearl would on a strand, and 8 to 9 mm is far and away the most popular range. Below about 7 mm starts to read small on most hands. Above 9 mm is a statement you will notice every time you reach for something.

Grade

A ring shows one pearl from every angle, with nothing beside it to hide behind, so we use AAA here almost without exception. What you are paying for is luster first, then a clean surface.

Metal

14K white, yellow or rose gold on most designs, solid throughout. The diamonds in our stocked rings are natural, VS1 clarity and G color. You choose the metal on the product page and the ring is made in that metal for you.

Ring size

Most designs are offered from 5 to 8.5, some from 4 to 10. Have the finger measured at a jeweler if you are not sure. A pearl ring is harder to resize later than a plain band, so it is worth getting right the first time.

Before you buy

How do I get the ring size right?

Have the finger measured at any jeweler, and measure the hand it will be worn on rather than the other one. This matters more on a pearl ring than on a plain band, because resizing means working around a pearl that cannot take heat, so it is not the simple job it is on a band of gold. If you are between sizes or buying as a surprise, tell us and we will talk it through before anything is made.

Can I see the exact pearl before it ships?

Ask us and we will photograph it for you. Nothing here is made in advance. The pearl is chosen for the setting and the ring is built around it, so what you receive was assembled for your order. Request photographs or a short video on any product page, at no cost and with no obligation to buy.

How should I care for a pearl ring?

A ring takes more punishment than anything else you will own in pearls, because hands do the work. Put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off before washing up or gardening. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth now and then. Do not put it in an ultrasonic cleaner, which will damage the nacre. Treated well, an akoya ring stays bright for decades.

What are the setting and diamonds made of?

Solid gold, 14K, in white, yellow or rose depending on the design. Never gold-plated and never base metal. The diamonds in our stocked rings are natural, VS1 clarity and G color. Unique pieces can vary, and their product pages say so. If you want a design in a metal or karat that is not listed, ask us, because these are made to order anyway.

Can you match a ring to other pearls I am buying?

We already do. If you order a ring at the same time as a necklace, earrings, a pendant or a bracelet, we match the pearls to each other before anything is set. You do not have to ask and there is no charge for it.

Still deciding?

Our specialists will show you pearls on camera and talk you through what you are looking at. Most appointments run about twenty minutes.
