Choosing an akoya pendant
Four things decide how a pendant wears and what it costs.
Size
Pendants run 6.0 to 9.5 mm. A pendant shows one pearl with nothing beside it, so size reads more directly than it does on a strand. That is why most people choose around 9 mm here even when they wear a smaller pearl in a strand. Smaller sizes read delicate and layer well.
Chain
A solid gold box chain is included, adjustable from 16 to 18 inches. Shimmer and rope chains are offered as upgrades on the product page if you want more weight and shine against the skin.
Metal
14K white or yellow gold as standard, rose on some designs. Solid throughout, chain and bail included, and you choose on the product page.
Diamonds
Many settings carry small diamond accents, always natural, VS1 clarity and G color. The pearl stays the center of the design. The diamonds are there to frame it.
Before you buy
Does the pendant come with a chain?
Yes, a solid gold chain at no extra cost, in the same karat as the setting. Every stocked pendant comes on a 16 to 18 inch adjustable chain, so it can be worn short at the base of the neck or long, or anywhere between. It is real gold, not a plated chain you will want to replace within a year. Shimmer and rope chains are offered as upgrades on the product page, and on a larger pearl a heavier chain often looks more balanced. If you need the chain longer or shorter than the standard, tell us before you order and we will make it to the length you want. A few one-of-a-kind pieces vary, and their product pages say so.
Can I see the exact pearl before it ships?
Ask us and we will photograph it for you. The pearl is chosen by hand and the pendant is set to order, so what you receive is made for you rather than pulled off a shelf. Request photographs or a short video on any product page, at no cost and with no obligation to buy.
Can you match a pendant to earrings or a necklace I am buying?
We already do. If you order a pendant at the same time as earrings, a necklace or a bracelet, we match the pearls to each other before anything is set. You do not have to ask and there is no charge for it. It is the reason a set bought from us in one order looks like a set rather than pieces that happen to be the same size.
What are the setting and chain made of?
Solid gold, chain and bail included. 14K is our standard because it is strong and it is the right weight for something worn every day, and a few special designs come in 18K. Never gold-plated and never base metal. The diamonds in our pendants are natural, VS1 clarity and G color.
Can I get earrings to match?
Yes, and it is the most common thing people add. Tell us which pendant you are looking at and we will match a pair of studs or dangles to the same pearl, or point you to a set that already exists. There is no charge for the matching when both pieces are ordered together.
